My Opinion About Skin Bleaching & Beauty Standards

As someone whose parents are ethnically Thai/Chinese, I come from a background where people are either extremely dark or extremely light in complexion. Just like other ethnicities, we all come in different shapes and shades.

More recently, because it’s summer time, I can get extremely tan; whereas during the winter months, while my complexion isn’t milky white like my mother’s, I am much lighter. The other night I was looking at some Thai beauty products online in search of an herbal night cream that my mom loves for her upcoming birthday and came across multiple creams with the purpose of “skin lightening” and “skin bleaching.”

It was quite shocking to see the obsession with skin bleaching especially in the Asian community. Skin bleaching, if you’ve never heard of it before, is a process of lightening your complexion. Darker skinned people bleach their skin in attempt to be lighter. People do this for various reasons but the main reason is vanity. It’s a cosmetic procedure with no health benefits, and it’s primarily due to color-ism and in some cases classism.

After doing some researching to become more informed about what is really in skin bleaching products, I found the two main active ingredients are hydroquinone and mercury. In 1982 the FDA approved hydroquinone for over-the-counter products. This was typically used for hyper-pigmentation, freckles, and dark spots. However, in 2006 the FDA revoked that approval because further testing on animals were found to cause harmful side effects included infertility and cancer. The other ingredient that is found in most skin bleaching products is mercury, which is more commonly found in African American targeted products. Mercury is commonly known to be very harmful, and these products are being made and sold illegally online, often untested. These products can come in the form of pills, soaps, and topical creams. Mercury poisoning is not a joke, you can get kidney failure, loss of brain function, fatigue and numbness. Physically the side effects can be blisters, skin ulcers, rash, and burning.

How these two ingredients work is basically they attack the melanin in your skin. They stop the production of melanocyte cells. Typically the amount of melanocyte cells depends on genetics. Unfortunately I have known friends of the Asian and Black community who bleach their skin and they look rather gray. Having melanin in your skin has a lot of health benefits, one of them being your skin ages more slowly. Additionally, melanin provides the ability to dissipate UV Rays, meaning you are less susceptible to radiation poisoning from the sun. Of course everyone should still wear sunscreen!

I believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I am proud that I have a lot of melanin in my body, however the downside of it is I scar extremely easily and scars appear more visible on people with more melanin. I think all skin shades are beautiful, and it does not define what makes someone appear more attractive whether they are darker or lighter. I know this topic may seem a bit controversial, but this is just my opinion.

I hope we all can learn to love ourselves a bit more and the skin that we’re in. And I hope that with time there becomes more representation of beauty in all forms and not just what is considered to be the standard.

COVID-19 Nail Crisis is Real

I know I am not the only one! Like most women around the world, once the pandemic occurred and nail shops were being forced to close, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of panic. I know that nails are the last thing anybody is going to worry about especially during times like these, but hey, call me a diva all you want; this girl still cares about her nails even if  no one is going to see me!

I was fortunate enough to have had a set of custom gel press-on nails made for me by my nail artist. Once I wore them out after 3 weeks I knew that the right thing to do was to attempt to do my own nails for the time being. Because as beautiful as the custom set was, and as much as I want to help support my local nail artists, it was pretty pricey and I needed to save my money! Because I don’t do my own nails the only thing I had at home were a set of nail clippers. I headed to CVS for the first time since the pandemic, and went wild in the store (haha!).

I picked up a bottle of Glittery Gold nail polish by Essie, a quick-drying top coat, nail file, acetone, a set of press-on nails from the brand KISS, and some other nail tools. Fifty-something dollars and a dark chocolate mint KitKat in hand later and it was time to head home and get started!

After I cut my natural nails down to little nubs, I filed and buffed them. I decided to save my set of press-ons for another time, so I painted my natural nails with the Glittery Gold nail polish and finished them off with the Essie quick drying top coat. I was happy to see that my real nails were still in great shape given the fact that I haven’t remove my acrylics for years and years. I am guilty of either getting a fill or a new set each time I am at the nail salon, therefore my nails were never given a break to breathe. A lot of nail techs often tell me how  they are surprised and that I am extremely fortunate to have such great nails despite the years and years of damage that I have done.

I really believe that the only reason why my nails aren’t in as bad a condition as they should be is the fact that I have been taking hair, skin, and nail gummy vitamins for years and I also enjoy drinking bone broth. I am often sipping on some bone broth at least once a week! My friends think I’m gross for this (lol), but honestly it tastes delicious! It’s like drinking chicken soup and I enjoy it a lot! Bone broth is known to promote collagen production which aids in the health and wellness of your nails and your skin. I also have noticed that my eczema has gotten a lot better after drinking bone broth.

I don’t know when nail salons are able to reopen again in Los Angeles but I am pretty content with the money that I am saving monthly from not doing my nails. Not to mention, I am pleased with my real nails and I think I am starting to get use to them. I hope everyone is staying safe out there. What are some things that you all miss? I’d love to hear what everyone is looking forward to once this pandemic is over!

The Ugly Truth – Why I Stopped Blogging/Getting Personal/ What I Was Going Through

Ever since I was a child I suffered from bad eczema. For those of you who are unaware of what eczema is, it a condition that causes the skin to become inflamed, itch, and causes skin to have rough patches, become cracked, and blistering ooze can also occur.

Over the years my mom spent countless dollars and hours to send me to the best dermatologists money could buy to try and cure my eczema. After many tears shed, a round of shots, and steroid creams I was finally cured after ten years! (Well, we thought!)

As the years went on I  was able to live life normally again. No longer did I have to make up a silly excuse time after time to friends that I couldn’t attend a beach outing or hide my skin in the summer under big loose sweatshirts and sweatpants! Those days were gone, and I never wanted to look back. EVER.

I’ve always been the type of girl who saw things through rose colored glasses, however sometimes in life we are faced with different challenges and have to go through things that crush your spirit and break your heart. Unfortunately I went through just that this past year, and what followed me during the dark times? That’s right: several major cases of hives, along with the return of eczema.

As if dealing with personal matters weren’t bad enough, talk about adding salt to the wound! After months of crying and feeling hopeless and heartbroken I decided that I can no longer allow myself to become depressed about anything in my life anymore and this was one of them. It was time to see a dermatologist and allergist and hope for the best. It turned out that my diet and stress/trauma was causing my hives and eczema to flare up. I was given a big list of foods that I should avoid, and that list consists of gluten, dairy, wheat, eggs, and citrus fruits. For those of you who know me in real life, you know that I absolutely love and eat each of those items on a daily basis and would never follow those rules lol!

Even after coming back from the derm and getting my pills, shots, and steroid creams, I know that I will never be fully cured and the harsh reality was if I didn’t change my mind set and diet I am going to go downhill again. This is a battle that I will constantly have but now it is time to fight. And I think after everything that I have gone through over these past few months, it’s time I start learning to love and find myself all over again.

Although healing is a process that will take time, I’m happy to report that I am in a much better head space these days and can finally start to blog again. I still have my sad moments and memories, but I am hopeful for the sunshine at the end of the rainbow.

This picture was taken on my trip to beautiful Lake Arrow Head to celebrate my birthday Pre-Covid-19 Scare/Quarantine. Just thankful that I was able to celebrate. (Pisces baby!)

I’m not perfect with my new eczema diet yet, and I still slip up and eat things I know I shouldn’t, but that’s OK. My life is a work in progress, and I’m just happy to be in the right mindset to be able to accept the things that aren’t perfect. We can’t control somethings that happen to us in life, but I can continue to work on my life and myself and that is all that I can do really.

My Fenty beauty review

Snapchat-962147098When Sephora announced that they would be carrying Rhianna’s first-ever makeup collection, all the beauty gurus and the makeup obsessed couldn’t wait! It was like pop culture and makeup fell in love! It was seemed like a match made in heaven. I stopped into Sephora during my lunch break per usual to check it out the first day the collection launched. I saw how bright and beautiful the highlighters were and the endless color choices of foundation that all the makeup reviewers were talking about. Because I had already just bought my foundation that I normally use and already have way more highlighters than any girl could need, I opted for the trio stick which came with a contour stick, highlight stick, and concealer.

Snapchat-607390528

Contour stick shade in Mocha:

I still don’t fully grasp the idea of contouring your whole face, nor do I have the time or skills, but I do like that the stick is easy to blend and the shade isn’t too dark or light for my skin.

Snapchat-1169144549.jpg

Highlight stick in Trippin’:

I love how pretty this highlight is. It isn’t the kind of highlight stick if you are that girl that is looking for a bright highlight you can blind someone with, haha! I love that it has a nice shimmer and that it is similar to my blush shade.

Snapchat-337516115.jpg

Concealer stick Bamboo:

The concealer stick from the Fenty Beauty is my least favorite of the three. I usually prefer my concealer to be more creamy and blend-able. This concealer left my skin on the dry side and doesn’t have as much coverage as I’d prefer. I will stick to my Nar’s or MAC concealer for my under eye area for now.

Although I haven’t tried anything else from the Fenty beauty collection, I am pleased with the products that I have purchased. I look forward to trying out more items from this collection. Those that have tried Fenty Beauty, what are your thoughts? What is worth trying and what is not?

Too-Faced for Sephora: The Peaches and Cream Haul

As someone whose nickname is Peach, this collection couldn’t have been a better fit for me! Too-Faced Cosmetics is one of my favorite brands when it comes to makeup, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled for this sweet collection!

Snapchat-2056236182

Once again, during my lunch break I went into Sephora to get my hands on the first day release of this collection. I only purchased three items from the line today, but after playing around with them I just might have to head back for more! 😛

Peach Kiss Matte Lipstick In the Shade Doll Face

Snapchat-1253662126

At first glance I was already head over heels with the packaging. It is by far the cutest lipstick that I’ve ever purchased from Too-Faced.  The color has a nude-ish hue (I know, I know, another nude colored lipstick?! Yes! I am obsessed with nude lips what can I say?) The lipstick smells absolutely amazing, the matte formula is supposed to be long-lasting and hydrating, and of course it is infused with refreshing peaches and sweet fig cream. Heck, everything from the peaches and cream collection smells devine. I also love how it has little peach patterns inside the lipstick. It is almost too cute to use!

Too-Faced Peach Perfect Mattifying Loose Setting Powder

Snapchat-2044999123

Again, I don’t think I need to clarify how adorable the packaging is, but I am obsessed! I am currently using the translucent setting powder from Laura Mercier which I use only under my eyes to set my concealer. I find it quite heavy, so I was in search of another one and happened upon this one. Of course, having only purchased this earlier this afternoon I cannot say how I like it. But this refreshing peach loose setting powder has “universal peach tint” that is supposed to set your foundation and brighten the skin, and I am looking forward to using this tomorrow!

Peach Mist Mattifying Setting Spray

Snapchat-492227637Snapchat-421793837

I am currently using my All Nighter setting spray from Urban Decay. I was running low and badly wanted the coconut infused setting spray when MAC cosmetics had their Fruity and Juicy collection this summer. I wasn’t able to get it because it was sold out the very first day that it had launched! I wasn’t surprised, but I was a bit bummed out. But this makes up for it! Well, they say good things come to those who wait! 😉 I sprayed a sample of this setting spray while I was shopping on my lunch break, and I knew that I needed to purchase it. The spray smelled amazing, and my makeup that I was wearing from this morning was still on even during this heat wave we have going on in California, so I knew this peach mist was a winner!

I would love to know your thoughts and see your Peaches and Cream haul from this collection! I know that I haven’t posted in awhile, but thank you to those that stuck around are still following. It is much appreciated; have a peachy day!

May Beauty Haul

IMG_20170512_220554_902.jpg

Hello lovelies,

I just wanted to share some of my favorite beauty products from May.  For this month’s shopping haul, I picked up a bit of everything from makeup and skincare to hair products; I needed to restock for my beauty pantry!

The Hair:

Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Conditioner: I’ve tried this shampoo and conditioner once before, and it’s helped my hair on its journey to recovery. I tend to run out of conditioner first, which is why I didn’t pick up the shampoo as well. Joico’s K-Pak is supposed to repair damaged hair and is safe to use on color treated hair. I picked mine up at Ulta when they had a sale.

20170512_123318.jpg

OGX Quick Drying Thermal Spray: I also picked up this heat protecting spray from Ulta. I have never tried this brand before, so I am pretty excited. I do love the way this product smells!

20170512_225543.jpg

So hurry to Ulta now for their gorgeous hair event (I am not sponsored, haha!) Going on now until the the beginning  of June!

Makeup:

Urban Decay Naked Illuminated Trio: Highlight and strobe your cheekbones with these three beautiful shades: Pyrite, Oasis, and Twilight. I tend to love everything from Urban Decay, and I have been wanting it for awhile so I had to purchase this!

Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray Mini: I have the large size that I use quite often, but I wanted one to be able to put in my makeup bag and have with me on the go!

20170512_122746

Skincare:

Kiehl’s Cucumber Herbal Alcohol-Free Toner: I purchased the large size of the toner because I tend to go through them rather quickly, so this would save me time and money in the long run. I love all of the toners from Kiehl’s.

Micellar Cleansing Water by Jean Pierre Travel Size: This was my first time purchasing this product. What caught my attention was the cute packaging! I purchased this at Ulta beauty, and I had brought this with me on my road trip. I gotta say, I love it! I will definitely be picking up the full-size soon! It was gentle on my skin and removed all of my makeup!

My Skin Care Routine

Love the skin you’re in. As a little girl my mother often told me how important it was to take care of my skin. I’ve suffered from eczema and sensitive skin for most of my life, and thankfully as I grew up it slowly went away. My skin care routine is pretty simple and here it is!

To remove my makeup I often like to use baby oil because it is very moisturizing and gentle. It also helps remove any waterproof makeup or stubborn lash glue residue.

JOHNSON’S® baby Oil

My favorite thing to use for my facial cleanser in the morning and at night is Cetaphil. I pretty much love Cetaphil and have been using their products my whole life. Whether it is for face or body, I use this brand. I think this is what partially cured my eczema. I couldn’t live without it!

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, 16.0 FL OZ

After I wash my face, I love to tone my face with a toner from Kiehl’s. I’ve tried all of their toners, but my all time favorite from them would have to be the Ultra facial toner. It is mild and moisturizing.  It doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals, alcohol, or fragrance that will irritate my skin.

Ultra Facial Toner

For my moisturizer, which I am always switching up and trying different ones, I am currently using the Skin Signature Melting Rich Cream from SK-II.

Every once in awhile when I have some down time, I like to apply a face mask. A current favorite at the moment would be from an Asian skin care line called Tony and Molly, which I happen to have found at Urban Outfitters.

I would love to know what are some of your favorite skin care products as well! 🙂

Springtime Glam

Doesn’t makeup always look better when someone else does it for you? Okay, not always. I just wanted to share an eye shadow look that my super-talented hair dresser and friend did for me the other day. I will insert her Youtube channel here whenever she decides to start filming again!

20170423_14140520170423_141357She created a cut-crease eye shadow look using her Too Faced Natural Love makeup palette.

Can we talk about how beautiful the packaging is?? I love Too Faced cosmetics for their amazing products and cute and girly packaging.

20170423_14143120170423_141501She also gave me an amazing highlight using the Too Faced Love Light highlighter, which I am obsessed with and just might need to purchase soon! And lastly, she set my makeup with this setting spray from Skindinavia.

The 1940’s Look

20170422_202809

Hello, world, I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I spent my Saturday at my cousin’s Fabulous 40’s themed birthday party. When I got the invite I automatically knew what dress I always wanted to wear, but to me the 1940’s were not so glamorous since makeup was scarce and bright, bold red lips just isn’t me. Still I managed to pull through and had fun with it!

My 1940’s vintage dress:

IMG_20170422_153724_588

The Dress: My beautiful true, blue vintage 1940’s dress was given to me from an older friend. It belonged to someone in her family. Now here it is, I can finally wear it. At first I was hesitant to wear it because I was sure that most of the guests at the speakeasy were not going to be in the 1940’s theme. Or if they were, they weren’t going to be wearing a full on costume! It made me think of the scene from Mean Girls when it was time for the Halloween party and Lindsey Lohan shows up wearing a scary bridezilla costume and all the other girls were wearing sexy lingerie with some form of animal ears! Girl world Vs Real world. Well, I chose real world.

The Hair: 1940’s were all about the victory rolls. Those Youtube girls really make them seem so easy! For me, they were anything but that; but I manged to somehow make a roll or two. They sure were anything but victory, haha! The girls back then didn’t seem to have long hair, but I curled all of my hair, brushed out the curls to create the waves, teased, and rolled it out the best I could!

Snapchat-1951353723

My victory rolls ended up looking like Maleficent as the night progressed (lol).

The Makeup:

Lips: For my red lips I used a matte lipstick from Smashbox cosmetics. It was the only red lip color I own that came in the Light It Up lipstick and mattifier set that given to me for my birthday. The shade is called “Be Legendary.”

20170422_151107

Eyes: For my eye shadow I used my Urban Decay Naked 3 palette. Although shimmer wasn’t the appropriate look at the times for eyes, I wanted to use something natural and smooth that popped (it is a party after all!), and the naked palette did just that. The shades I used were “Dust” and “Nooner.”

20170422_152032

Face: I primed my face with the Chanel primer and used my Chanel foundation that are in my Everyday Makeup post. For my cheeks I used the Hoola bronzer from Benefit cosmetics to contour my cheeks a bit, and I added a pop of color using the Mariah Carey blush collection for MAC in the shade “You Got Me Feeling.”

Some pictures from my cousin’s party. Happy Birthday, Jaime! Love you!! I had a wonderful time.

The beautiful cupcakes (the sprinkles were edible)!

The Road to Healthier Hair

I have a love and hate relationship with my hair. Together we’ve been through hell and back (haha)! Thank goodness I realized I have been taking my hair for granted, and I haven’t really been giving it the TLC it really needed.  I knew that in order to avoid the big chop I had to get serious.

Image result for hair rollers vintage

  • I stopped curling my hair everyday. Thanks to my mom, I have a set of old school hair rollers that I am addicted to! I never leave the house without one for my bangs. (I have stubborn bangs!)
  • I didn’t color my hair for at least a year! It was so hard to watch hair color fade and grow out, but I stuck with it!
  • I started taking Hair, Skin, and Nail gummy vitamins. I don’t know if this helped, but I like to think it did!
  • I finally started using a heat protectant spray if I did use any heat tools.
  • I get a trim once a month.
  • I started using Mane and Tail (a classic, but also a shampoo for horses haha)!
  • And lastly, when I remembered, I rubbed coconut oil on the ends of my hair. A little goes a long way.

My dear friend and hair dresser always told me “Love your hair and it will love you.” she couldn’t be more right.
